14.05.09 35 000th Gene Donor in the Estonian Genome Project!

The database of the EGP is growing fast and people are still interested in joining it.

Yesterday the 35 000th gene donor joined the EGP. With the increase of the number of gene donors, it will be suitable for many genetic epidemiological studies. The large number of donors makes database of the EGP very valuable for different disciplines that need such kind of large databases. That enables to increase the importance of Estonia as a well-known country of science in Europe and elsewhere in the world and gives new possibilities for Estonian scientists.

The Estonian Genome Project is a research institute of the University of Tartu. This year it is financed by the University of Tartu, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Social Affairs and research programs of the European Union. In the previous years the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications has contributed to it as well.

The Estonian Genome Project, University of Tartu  carries out the Estonian Genome Project with the goal to create a database (biobank) of health, genealogy and genomic data from 50 -100 000 individuals. The database will make it possible to carry out research to find links between genes, environmental factors, lifestyles and common diseases or other traits.
People who are at least 18 are still expected to join the EGP. Right now, all men and women over 55 are particularly expected to make the database of the EGP corresponding to the population of Estonia.

The Gene Donor extends a hand to the future!
