2nd Practical Biobanking Workshop for emerging biobanks was held in Helsinki

2nd Practical Biobanking Workshop for emerging biobanks was held on 26-27.9.2014 in Helsinki, Finland.
Altogether 37 participants from the biobanking field attended the workshop from 14 different Member states and international countries. Covering the theme of the workshop "Starting from Scratch", the program was focused on collecting, handling and storing a large population cohort and relevant phenotypic data. Practical hands-on exercises were offered for the participants showing different availability tools and databases for research data, and demonstrating the sample flow in population cohort collections (serum and plasma sample preparation, automated DNA extraction and PBMC Ficoll fractioning).
The successful workshop received excellent feedback from the participants with its practical approach and revealed the true need for practicalities when sharing the expertise across the biobanking community. Topics for next year were suggested by the participants to cover storage management, newest techniques in sample handling, quality control, and the use of biobanks in patient care.
