The next Guest Seminar of the CoE for Genomics and Translational Medicine will be held on February 14th, 2019 at 11:00 (Omicum building, room 105) by Prof. Augustine Kong (University of Oxford, UK).

Biography: Prior to his career at the University of Oxford, Prof. Kong led deCODE’s statistics team. Prior to joining deCODE, he served on the faculty of the University of Chicago. Prof. Kong received his Ph.D. in statistics from Harvard University in 1986.

Title of the talk: "GENETIC NURTURE AND FAMILY DATA”

Abstract: In a recent publication (Science, Jan, 2018), we demonstrated that the DNA in the parents, both the halves that were transmitted to the offspring (the proband) and the halves that were not transmitted, can impact the fate of the proband through their effects on the parents’ characteristics which in turn affect the nurture received by the proband. We call this phenomenon genetic nurture. The existence of genetic nurture is relevant to many areas of statistical genetics. This talk would cover published results, as well as current and future research. Importance of family data, such as those in Iceland and Estonia, would be highlighted. The Centre of Excellence for Genomics and Translational Medicine is funded by EU European Regional Development Fund (Project No.2014-2020.4.01.15-0012).
